B.Com / M.Com / Commerce · Fresher guide

B.Com is the foundation. Certifications + internship framing decide where you land.

Accounting, audit, FP&A, business analyst — same B.Com, different positioning. Here's what works for each path.

Roles your degree opens up

4 hiring loops, one degree.

Each role page below has a dedicated fresher section — role-specific tips, ship-in-a-weekend project ideas with the exact bullet shape, and the keywords ATS parsers weight for that role.

How to spend your time before placements

The moves that move the needle.

College time is short and most of it gets spent on coursework. These are the activities that actually carry weight on a fresher resume — pick the 2–3 you can realistically commit to and go deep.

  • 01

Pick your certification track early — CA, CMA, CFA, ACCA. Each opens different doors. CA Inter cleared = strongest single fresher signal in India.

  • 02

Internship at a CA firm (Big-4 or mid-tier) > everything else for accounting / audit hires. Apply broadly, take the offer, learn one full month-end close.

  • 03

Tally fluency for India + Excel modeling (pivot tables, INDEX/MATCH, lookups, basic VBA) — both are hard requirements for entry-level finance roles.

  • 04

For analyst roles: learn SQL + Power BI / Tableau on top of B.Com. The combination is rare and makes you a strong BA candidate immediately.

  • 05

Volunteer to do books for a small business / NGO — even unpaid for 6 months. Real ledgers > simulated coursework on every resume screener.

Where to source experience

The clubs, certs, and internships that carry weight.

Not every activity converts. These are the ones that show up on screening shortlists for B.Com / M.Com / Commerce freshers — picked over generic alternatives.

  • CA articleship + CA Inter cleared

CA Inter (CA IPCC) cleared + articleship in progress is one of the strongest fresher signals for any finance / accounting JD in India.

  • Internships at CA firms (Big-4, mid-tier) or in-house accounts teams

A 2-month summer internship counts as real exposure. Apply early — Big-4 articleship slots fill quickly.

  • Industry certifications — CFA L1, FMVA, NISM (capital markets)

CFA L1 cleared = strong FA / IB signal. NISM Series-V is the quick entry-cert for broking / investment-advisory roles.

  • College finance / investment club — managed portfolios, paper-trading

Active membership + a documented (even paper) portfolio with reasoning signals investing thinking. Reasoning matters more than ranking.
